We recently had the chance to catch up with Richie Fallon, a much-loved and long-serving member of the Ballymore team. At 74, Richie continues to bring humour, energy, and a genuine passion for his work that inspires everyone around him.

Tell us your role at Ballymore Racing and how long have you worked with us?

Worked for Ballymore Stables/Racing for 15 years. Leading horses to and from the track, handing out lollies throughout the morning and keeping spirits up with a few jokes here and there!

Richie holds us all together most mornings with his quick wit and endless energy. He tried to retire years ago but his passion for the horses has kept him going a little longer working 2 or 3 mornings a week and expertly travelling our horses to the South Island where he has developed a nice base for us.

Tell us about your background in racing?

Left school at 16 and started work for DJ O’Sullivan at the same stables we are in today.

First horse I ever looked after was a horse called Tabec who won six races from his first seven starts.

Have spent a lifetime in racing working in New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia. Met some incredible people along the way with so many good memories.

Tell us some memorable moments about your time so far in the industry and at Ballymore Racing?

Best Horse I ever looked after was a horse called Jolly Jake, winner of the 1984 NZ Derby. I used to ride him every day for my boss Alan Jones. Also a horse called Alynda winner of multiple Group races.

At Ballymore I have been privileged to look after horses such as Arrogant, Savile Row, On The Rocks, Harlech and most recently Cork. Long may it continue!

Best one line joke:

What do you call a dog with no legs?

Doesn’t matter it won’t come to you anyway!
