We caught up with the team at Thompson Performance Horses who we often send horses to that need a bit of variety adding to their work and a freshen up. It has been a very beneficial partnership, most recently seen by the success of talented mare Zerre; and one we will be utilising more in the future.
Who are Thompson Performance Horses?
Owned and operated by Jacob Thompson, Thompson Performance Horses is a breaking-in, pre-training, and equestrian facility located on the outskirts of Matamata in Waharoa, beautifully set beneath the Kaimai Ranges.
Run by Jacob Thompson and assistant manager Mya Beckett, we offer a wide range of training services, backed by a strong background in equestrian sport.
What happens when you get a horse from Ballymore Racing?
When horses arrive from the Ballymore Racing team, we focus on providing variety in their work. This includes long-and-low lunging to encourage stretching over their back and topline, progressing into flat schooling and arena work, as well as pole and jumping exercises. Many horses also benefit from work around our home track to develop or maintain fitness.
Why would a horse go to Thompson Performance Horses and how often?
A horse that is starting to show signs of requiring a change of environment or a need for variety will come to us - it is a true testament to the old adage ‘a change is as good as a holiday’.
We will take a horse as often as required - we will sometimes see the same horse multiple times in a preparation. Every horse is different and requires a different style of training and approach - there is 'no one size fits all' when it comes to horses.

We have had the pleasure of working with a number of horses from Ballymore Racing, with a few stable favourites including Khando and Zerre.
